How to choose the right Rims

i have been using this set of 18inch rims with falken tires for almost a year now, came along when i bought this car, after a wheel and about 30k km of travelling, the tires started to emit this very loud sound when i pick up, the sound goes away at a higher speed of 80km/hr and above, i noticed too the Fuel consumption of the car went up as well as a result.

initially i thought there was something wrong with my brakes but after checknig with a few mechanics, they all said my rims were too big and advised me to switch to a smaller set of rims. with bigger rims means bigger fuel consumption too of about 8km per litre or less.

after some inspect on the tires i realized the front set of wheels is balding internally, what i did first thinking my tires were faulty i switch the back wheels to the front, the sound got louder this time and i was concerned, finally i decided to bring the car to M and Q at Tampines behind Safra for an inspection along with my usual servicing, Mr Chia was friendly and honest in my dealings with him, basically he told me it was the tires that were the culprit, just switch to smaller set of rims, he recommended 15 or 16 which is the recommended stock size for a e36 318ia.

anyway to cut the long story short, i learnt too that my car was previously lowered, and as a result with the larger rims, the weight is caving internally on the car, resulting in a negative camber, thus the inner thread of the front wheels are wearing out fast than the ones at the back.

so i decided to change my rims quickly, a friend recommended a tire shop along Ubi Avenue called LS at blk 53, they had a set of almost brand new BBS rims and they do trade in which was just what i need.

BBS is a german brand, they manufacture forged alloy rims which are stronger and much lighter than my steel rims, after trade in i had to top up about $300, the original price was $800 for the set of BBS rims, they charged me $175 for a piece of Firenza 225/40 tires, 225 is the wdith of the tire, not sure what the 40 meant, all in i paid about $1000 for the BBS rims and the new tires.

it's been 3 days since and the car feels much lighter than before, pick up has improved tremendously. however i think the 17inch is probably still too big for my ride, whenever i do a u-turn u can hear the tires rubbing against the inner side of the car.

my wife was more concern that the BMW logo was gone from the rims. i will assess the situation and hopefully the camber situation is alirhgt, worse case scenario is to switch to 16inch instead.

Hey Shie,

Great post, thanks for the story.

Tire sizes are measured in mm's. If, for the sake of an example, a tire size is 225/40 V16. This is how it's broken down:
- 225: Width of tire in millimeters. In this case, this tire is 225mm wide.

- 40: Is the width of the tire's sidewall as a percentage of the tire's width. For our example, the tire's sidewall is (225*40)/100 millimeters wide. Meaning that it's about 90mm wide.

- V: Is the speed rating of the tire.

- 16: Is the rim size (diameter) of the rim than can be mounted on the tire.

You can find more information at the following link in case you need to read more:

Hope this helps!

Hi Shei,

Good information that you got. I just got my E36 and had send it to Mr Chia for some test. Pretty good service. Any how, just want to know how is your fuel comsumption for your car currently with the 17s? I'm currently using 215/45/17 with falken tyres only manage 435km with a comsumption of 59litres of petrol. Mr Chia commented that my car's Oxygen sensor not too good.

Hi Shei,

Good information you got there. I just got my E36 318. Just want to understand how is your fuel consumption with the 17s. I had a set of 17s and tyres at 215/45/17 and recent calculation shows 435km for 59litres of petrol. so it works out to be less than 8km/litres! I had send to M&Q for some test and it states that my Oxygen sensor not too good, with a strong petrol fumes during idling. Just one more question, does the Oxygen sensor helps to improve fuel consumption?
Many thanks,

thanks for reading! almost all component related to the engine will help to improve Fuel efficiency. your fc is not uncommon among most e36. another thing to look out for is probably leak in the fuel tank...fuel might be evaporating...bottomline is this...is gonna cost u some dough to get it up and running efficiently...so plan ahead on what u want to purchase...one part at a time. i hope this help. btw, do join us for some meet-up soon. hi shie....

i think this is disgustingly outdated but i think i will still comment.

after reading your post, i think the sound is due to your spoilt tires, nothing to do with your previous 18inch rims. When you swapped it to the back, it got louder... welll.. yea... because your e36 should be rear wheel drive (rwd) which probably means when the power is transfered to the spoilt tire the sound become louder.

anyway, you say your 17 got rubbing sound means it is still too big? i dun think so....

i think it is due to the rims having wrong offset. either roll the fender or put spacer... depending on where it is rubbing.

negative camber... well... e36 stock wise have negative camber on the rear if i am not wrong... and i dun think lowering it causes anything wrong...

M&Q is good... i go there too... not the cheapest but somewhat trust worthy.... but if anything performance related.... i think they dun have much experiene.... they dun do mods..... so just the basic trusty stock repair works only.... at a higher price but at least they wun chop you...

ok i may not know much la... i dun own an e36... i drive an e34... so most repairs or situation i might have already gone through it already... =)

sorry for replying to an old post....
